JPK Instruments AG, Berlin, in conjunction with the Biozentrum
Basel, has opened a new imaging center, specializing in the use
of atomic force microscopy - AFM - in the field of biological
research. Three NanoWizard® atomic force microscopes, developed
by JPK, are now available at the M.-E.-Müller-Institute for
both teaching and research.
Internationally renowned AFM and membrane protein specialist,
Prof. Dr. Andreas Engel, plans to combine NanoWizard AFM imaging
with optical microscopy for the high-resolution imaging of membrane
proteins. Due to its cross-regional importance, the Imaging Facility
will also make these instruments available for demonstration purposes
and international workshops. In addition, AFM experts from both
Basel and Berlin, in close co-operation, will focus on the continual
development of BioAFM technology and related techniques.
The NanoWizard® atomic force microscope has a broad spectrum
of applications, from imaging of cells, proteins, DNA and other
biomolecules to the investigation of molecular interactions and
the mechanical properties of cells and tissues. The new Imaging
Facility in Basel will contribute to further innovation in the
use of AFM technology in life science.
