| New Possibilities in
Living Cell Microscopy - JPK extends the NanoWizard® AFM
System with BioCell May 17, 2004 |
JPK Instruments AG, a specialist for nano-biotechnological microscopy,
extends its range of accessories for the NanoWizard® Atomic
Force Microscope (AFM) with a temperature-controlled fluid cell.
The BioCell allows for the temperature-dependent study of
living cells or single molecules with the NanoWizard® AFM
in their native environment. It is therefore particularly suited
for applications in cell biology and medical research.
The closed fluid cell can be tempered between 15°C and 60°C,
and it allows for the exchange of fluids and the supply of gases
(e.g. CO2). As an add-on for inverted optical microscopes the
NanoWizard® AFM in combination with the BioCell offers
the unique possibility to simultaneously study temperature-dependent
processes like cell motility and metabolism with the AFM and under
the light microscope.
During AFM measurement all the light microscope's operation modes,
in particular certain contrast techniques, remain constantly available.
Even high-resolution fluorescence confocal microscopy and single-molecule
fluorescence techniques are possible since the special objective
lenses required can be used. JPK's NanoWizard® AFM system
is the only system currently available worldwide that can offer
this versatility.
The following accessories are available for JPK's NanoWizard®
AFM:
- High-Temperature Heating System: room temperature to 240°C,
for polymers
- Heating-Cooling System: from 0°C to 100°C, for biopolymers
- SmallCell: Fluid cell for small volumes
- BioCell: Temperature-controlled fluid cell for biomaterials
