| 2nd JPK Instruments Workshop:
Exchange of Latest Findings from the Application of Nano-Microscopy
in the Life Sciences October 27, 2003 |
Developments of the application of Atomic Force Microscopy in
life and medical sciences were at the centre of the 2nd Workshop
"Scanning Probe Microscopy in Life Sciences". More than
70 international experts from the areas of bio and medical sciences
took part in the high-profile one-day event held at the campus
of the Virchow Klinikum, Berlin.
The opening speech of the workshop was held by Andreas Jordan,
Ph.D., from the Centre of Biomedical Nanotechnology at the University
Clinic "Charité" (Dpt. of Radiation Oncology),
who recently created considerable stir with his work on the application
of nano-particles in the destruction of tumour tissue. This was
followed by presentations by renowned scientists amongst them
was the co-inventor of Atomic Force Microscopy, Prof. Christoph
Gerber, Ph.D., from the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, at Rüschlikon,
Switzerland.
The spectrum of the high-profile scientific programme spanned
the complete range from the characterisation of cell membranes
and the application of this microscopy technique in medical diagnostics
to its "classic" application of surface structure detection
in the nano-metre range.
For the first time this year a poster presentation was held. Together
with the various speeches it provided a valuable overview on the
whole range of present applications as well as on the potential
Atomic Force Microscopy holds for answers to particular questions
in the Life Sciences.
Next year's workshop will be held at roundabout the same time
in the year.
Abstracts of all contribution are available at spm-workshop.jpk.com
